Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Stainless steel tools glided across the tissue to find and work through scar tissue and fascial restriction.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

What it is

Understanding iastm

IASTM uses specialised stainless steel instruments across the surface of the skin. The tool transmits what the hand cannot always feel, so restrictions and adhesions become obvious to the practitioner and can be worked precisely.

The controlled treatment prompts a local healing response. It is a good fit for older scar tissue and for areas where hands alone have plateaued.

How it works

How IASTM fits the visit

Assess and locate. The instrument is glided over the area. Restrictions and adhesions register through the tool, which narrows down where the actual problem is.

Work the restriction. Controlled strokes target scar tissue and fascial restriction, prompting a local response that supports tissue remodelling.

Retrain the movement. Movement retraining reinforces the motion that has just been freed, so the tissue has a reason to stay that way.

Take it home. Sessions finish with customized home exercises, because what happens between visits decides whether the change lasts.

What it helps

Where IASTM gets used

The issues the clinic names for this technique.

  • Stiff or irritated joints
  • Scar tissue limiting glide
  • Chronic muscle tightness
  • Sports injuries
  • Fascial restriction
  • Tissue that has plateaued with hands alone
